Make Ethiopia the manufacturing hub of Africa and achieve middle-income status until 2015
H.E. Dr. Mebrahtu Meles - State Minister, Ministry of Industry
Agro-processing is one of the priority sectors in Ethiopia that offer significant investment opportunities for both domestic as well as foreign investors. Owing to its unique and suitable agro climate conditions, Ethiopia produces a wide range of agricultural commodities including coffee, livestock products, oil seeds and pulses, fruits, vegetables and flowers spices etc. A livestock sector is also another potential sector. The Government of Ethiopia is exerting unreserved efforts to increase the supply and improve the quality of these products. The entire agro sector potential places Ethiopia as a great promising country for agro-processing and related investments.
Besides to the very high potential for increased supply of raw materials, the agro-industry sector in Ethiopia has many potential advantages including low labour cost, growing domestic market as well as proximity to greater African, European and Middle East markets. Government policies have also focused on constantly improving the business environment, which has had a positive impact on the facilitation of agro-industry investments in particular and improving the overall economic development in general.
The country is demonstrating a bright pathway of its renaissance with a double digit growth, political stability, peace and security and significant developments in a wide range of economic sectors for over 14 years in row. These achievements arise due to not only from designing sound economic policies and strategies but also their appropriate implementation.
As a result, the country become one of the world’s fastest growing economies and showing impressive investment inflow. It is becoming a promising investment destination in Africa. Currently, the Government provides very competitive and attractive benefit packages for agro-processing and other investments in priority areas.
Until 2025 we target to make Ethiopia the manufacturing hub of Africa and to achieve middle-income status for our population. All this shall be reached within the framework of a carbon neutral economy.
Finally, on behalf of the Federal Democratic Republic of Ethiopia, Ministry of Industry and Myself I want to assure you that we are committed to work closely with all partners and investors to flourish the agro & plastprintpack industry in the country.
Ms Marina Abié, Deputy Head of the Economic Service, French Embassy in Ethiopia
As you know, France is a big agricultural country. In fact it is the leading agricultural powerhouse in Europe with 17% of the European production. In 2017, France exported over 60 billion euro worth of agricultural and agrifood products, thus making it its largest export sector.
France has therefore renowned expertise in the agriculture and food industry and this expertise will be without a doubt very useful for Ethiopia, in order to ensure the successful transformation and modernization of its agriculture. Of course we are already supporting Ethiopia through various ways.
For example, we are helping the country to define a legal framework for geographical indications. As you know, Ethiopia already has high value added agricultural products, which could represent an important share of its exports. However, international demand for these products remains below its full potential.
Today agrofood & plastprintpack Ethiopia 2018 is an excellent opportunity for project promoters and investors to meet French leading manufactures of equipment and machineries for agribusiness.
The French Pavilion is organized by adepta. Besides adepta, nine French companies present their technologies and equipment. They steam from a wide range of sectors, and will definitly meet the expectations of professionals looking for solutions in irrigation, spraying, water management, capping and packaging - in agriculture as well as in food and beverage industries. Together they offer complete solutions for each production stage and they can without a doubt contribute to value addition in the Ethiopian agri-business sector.
Mrs Martina Claus, Head of Market Development Africa - VDMA Food Processing & Packaging Machinery Association
Two years ago our association organized a market exploration trip to Ethiopia.
Last year, a significant delegation of German companies participated in the first international agrofood & plastprintpack Ethiopia show.
This year again German companies will present their best know-how, services and their latest technology here. Manufactureres of machinery, ingredients and materials for the production and packaging of food and beverages will present a broad selection of their products and look forward to intensifying their contacts with the Ethiopian industry.
Packaged food and beverages form the best-performing industries in Africa, despite the challenges for the economies.
This is especially true for Ethiopia, the country with the second largest population on the African continent.
In the last ten years the annual value of food and beverages produced in the country has increased thirteen times to nearly 6 billion Euros in 2016.
In the same period the annual imports of machinery for food and beverage processing and packaging from all over the world have quadrupled to nearly 130 million Euros. These figures reflect the growing demand for processed and packaged foods and beverages in this country. Reasons for this are the increasing prosperity and consumption of a growing population, but also the effort to expand the added value in the processing of foods.
German manufacturers, as the world leading exporters of food processing and packaging machinery, belong to the most important suppliers for Ethiopia’s industry.
Our companies’ advanced technologies, a wide variety of products and tailor-made solutions for specific customer requirements strengthen the economic performance of the local manufacturers.
agrofood & plastprintpack Ethiopia 2018 will give you an excellent opportunity to meet leading German companies and to learn about the latest developments and trends in the sector of food processing and packaging.
Mr Paul März, Managing Director - fairtrade

Technology is key in the development of the Ethiopian economy and thus the Ethiopian government is investing in technology and is promoting the development of its industry parks.

Mr Flip van Biljon, Area Sales Manager - Ishida
The population of Ethiopia stands around 100 million and there is a government led initiative to develop the agri-business, this coupled with the general African trends of urbanisation and growing middle class make Ethiopia a territory of developing significance. The perceived specific opportunity is adding value to Ethiopian produce to enable Ethiopia to derive greater value from export market.
At many of the shows we have attended in the region there are realistically three categories of customers who visit our stand:
- Those who do not currently work in the sector at all but express a desire to start a new business and some point in the future.
- Companies who are currently in the business but process low volumes of product which is manually packed.
- Companies who have some form of automation and are looking to enhance capability.
The split of visitors at agrofood Ethiopia 2018 is estimated at Category 1 – 60%, Category 2 – 10% and Category 3 – 30% At the mid-point of day 2, I would say that the highlight of the show is the quality of visitors on day 1 which did surprise us as there were a realistic quantity in category 3.
