Martina Claus, Head of Market Development Africa - German Engineering Federation (VDMA) - Food Processing & Packaging Machinery Association
"Representatives from our VDMA Food Processing and Packaging Machinery Association and a delegation of German businessmen came to Addis Ababa in March this year as part of a market exploration trip and its opening symposium. Our goal was to explore the Ethiopian foodstuffs markets and to develop initial contacts to important business operators in this sector
In 2017 we will again present the strengths of German engineering in Ethiopia, this time with a delegation of member companies, who will be taking part in the first International agrofood plastpack Ethiopia trade show. This event will give you an excellent opportunity to meet leading manufacturers of machinery for the production and packaging of food and beverages. The German companies are looking forward to intensifying their contacts to and cooperation with the Ethiopian food processing industry.
German exports of food processing and packaging machinery to Africa have almost tripled since 2006, and Ethiopia in particular is one of the most important markets for foodstuffs in Sub-Saharan Africa. In the last ten years the annual value of food and beverages produced in the country has increased ten times to 2.4 billion Euros in 2015. In the same period the annual imports of machinery for food and beverage processing and packaging from all over the world have quintupled to 90 million Euros. These figures reflect the growing demand for processed and packaged foods and beverages. Reasons for this are the increasing prosperity and consumption of a growing population, but also the effort to expand the added value in the processing of foods.”
